General Information
The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) at James Madison University (JMU) is accepting applications for an Information Technology Specialist II to support the vision of JMU and the CSM Office of the Dean, by providing hardware, specialized software, and technology support to faculty, staff, and students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and to provide guidance and expertise in Cloud-based computing to the College. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics comprises 53 full-time faculty and 2 full-time staff, 24 part-time faculty, 3 large teaching labs, and 4 smaller research and teaching labs.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinate with JMU central IT services to provide support, maintenance, and problem resolution for specialized software used by faculty and staff in the Department.
  • Work with JMU central IT to manage and maintain computers and technology within 3 large teaching labs and 4 smaller labs all running Windows OS.
  • Coordinate with JMU central IT services to install and maintain computers of all faculty and staff (both full-time and part-time), the majority of which use Mac OSX, as well as to install and configure specialized software on these computers.
  • Support faculty in the use of classroom and departmental educational technologies, coordinating with JMU Classroom Technology Services as appropriate.
  • Communicate and coordinate activities with supervisor and IT Specialist peers within CSM, in order to aid in technology planning, coordination, and information exchange across the College and JMU.
  • Provide guidance and expertise to CSM in Cloud-based computing.

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills are essential as is the ability to work well with faculty and students, and other IT Specialists.
  • Significant knowledge of Apple and Windows computing environments, both hardware and software.
  • Significant knowledge of current and emerging technologies, including Cloud-based computing.
  • A working proficiency with Linux systems is required, but expertise is not.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve computer software problems.
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly.
  • Experience in providing service, support, and/or training to others.
  • Ability to effectively assimilate and communicate relevant information to facilitate the efficient resolution of and prevention of problems.
  • Bachelor’s in Information Technology, Computer Science, Systems Administration, Computer Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience preferred.

IT Operations Technician, Segra | Waynesboro

The IT Operations Technician will monitor and maintain an IBM ISeries mainframe. Technical duties will include running daily processes necessary for billing cycles, processing billing cycles and all jobs related on the ICMS system. The Technician will be responsible for updating mainframe applications with system or security updates. The technician insures the accuracy and integrity of loaded and processed data, in addition to troubleshooting all system issues. They perform daily, weekly and monthly backup tape maintenance on two (2) AS/$00 Midrange systems – including rotation for disaster recovery and support of non-AS/400 equipment. Additionally, the Technicians are responsible for physical transport of disaster recovery tapes to secure physical location.

The Technician is responsible for establishing and maintaining environments for research, development and for test and verification purposes upon request for over 12 copies of the Lumos billing system daily.

The Technician will verify and check connections to other systems including Contract fulfillment, point of purchase and mapping. This requires an understanding of several network protocols depending on the connection type.

They will troubleshoot issues on billing applications, physical plant applications, code management applications, transactional servers, and fraud management systems.

The Technician will assist management and internal departments in completion of tasks and projects, including promotion and validation of code and various reporting functions.

The Technician maintains/performs active directory administration; account creation and management for Active Directory as well as any system managed in AD. They update and create mailboxes for user and service accounts.

The Technician is the driver of our audit process. They generate Quarterly access audits for AD groups and SOX regulated systems access and are responsible to follow up on responses from the business leaders for corrections needed to the access lists. They generate monthly contractor audits to ensure timely removal of contractor access from our systems/network.

The Technician is primary support on at least two non-enterprise applications other than what is listed above.

Qualifications:

  • Education: HS w/tech school or IT training.
  • Experience: Corporate level basic computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft office products required. Prior experience with an AS400 System I mainframe is a plus, but not necessary.
  • Key Competencies: System command line experience. Program troubleshooting skills. Joblog interpretation skills. Software upgrade experience. Experience with Active Directory and exchange.
